Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Sunez Allah has been a 5 Percenter, one of the Gods of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths since 1999. Sunez, a prominent creative who has pioneered the establishment of the Writer element in Hip Hop as a writer/journalist/historian, published hundreds of articles, essential books, host of DJ Toshi's Classic Storm Radio show and his own podcast, The Power Write Show. He is a member of the prominent Lo Lifes organization as well as the anti-gentrification collective, The Leftovers NYC. Sunez has been an author and editor of major works on the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths including editing The Immortal Birth by Allah Jihad, The Righteous Way & The Righteous Way: The Golden Jubilee Edition, and The Righteous Way: Infinity Edition by Starmel Allah and co-editing the Knowledge of Self: A Collection of Wisdom on the Science of Everything in Life. As a member of the 5% NGE, he has taught the longest running course at Allah School in Mecca, in Harlem, New York City. The P.E.A.C.E. Interviews with young Muslims in Chicago explore the complexity of identities formed at the crossroads of Islam and hip hop This groundbreaking study of race, religion and popular culture in the 21st century United States focuses on a new concept, “Muslim Cool.” Muslim Cool is a way of being an American Muslim—displayed in ideas, dress, social activism in the ’hood, and in complex relationships to state power. Constructed through hip hop and the performance of Blackness, Muslim Cool is a way of engaging with the Black American experience by both Black and non-Black young Muslims that challenges racist norms in the U.S. as well as dominant ethnic and religious structures within American Muslim communities. Drawing on over two years of ethnographic research, Su'ad Abdul Khabeer illuminates the ways in which young and multiethnic US Muslims draw on Blackness to construct their identities as Muslims. This is a form of critical Muslim self-making that builds on interconnections and intersections, rather than divisions between “Black” and “Muslim.” Thus, by countering the notion that Blackness and the Muslim experience are fundamentally different, Muslim Cool poses a critical challenge to dominant ideas that Muslims are “foreign” to the United States and puts Blackness at the center of the study of American Islam. Yet Muslim Cool also demonstrates that connections to Blackness made through hip hop are critical and contested—critical because they push back against the pervasive phenomenon of anti-Blackness and contested because questions of race, class, gender, and nationality continue to complicate self-making in the United States.

This book is based on the true history of Allah "the Father" and His great Nation of Gods and Earths known as the Five Percenters. This is the greatest story that was never told by the Gods and the Earths during their younger years with Allah "the Father" from the early 1960s up until the time of his assassination on June 13, 1969. This was a time of struggle for the Black Man, Woman, and Child (the Universal Family). This was the time of "the Big Five", who were: Allah "the Father", who brought about the Nation of Gods and Earths known as the Five Percenters; the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, who was the last and greatest messenger of Allah, also the leader and teacher of the Black Muslims; Malcolm X of the new arrival; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader; and the Black Panther Party on the East and West coasts. These five groups were called the Big Five, because they had the attention of every Black Man, Woman, and Child in the wilderness of North America and other parts of our planet. There was a host of other Black groups as well. This was a time when the Five Percenter's teachings were being taught/spoken so plain and simple that even a child could understand. Black people were on the rise, and it was a time for a change—for Black Man, Woman, and Child to take their place on earth. Peace!
